MacKenzie Craig’s respiratory therapy journey instills CARES values
Raised in Arcola, Sask., MacKenzie Craig discovered respiratory therapy while working up north as a primary care paramedic. “That experience opened my eyes” she said. “Respiratory therapy let me grow while maintaining what I loved about emergency medical services.”
After training at Canadore College in Ontario, she was excited to return to Saskatchewan for clinical placements. She gained exceptional hands-on experience in home care, intensive care unit, emergency department, pulmonary function lab, neonatal, pediatrics, and hospital wards - developing critical skills like assisting in high-risk deliveries.
“My placement was amazing—incredible mentors and staff shared their expertise in a welcoming, safe environment,” she said.
Now passionate about delivering safe, culturally sensitive care to all ages, MacKenzie embodies the SHA’s CARES values of compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety.
Mackenzie sees Saskatchewan’s first in-province respiratory therapy program as a major step forward. “Bringing the program here is great progress in closing the gap for students and patients needing cardiopulmonary care.”
