New online education module for MHSA demonstrates SHA CARES values
The Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) have collaborated to create a new online training module about the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA).
The MHSA is complex. SHA staff encounter the Act and its regulations frequently while providing care. With the support of the Ministry of Health and the SHA Organizational Culture Department, this online educational module was created in response to SHA staff and leadership requests for training on the Act.
“Every day, staff and physicians bring the SHA’s CARES values (compassion, accountability, respect, equity, and safety) to life. The online training module about the MHSA is one way we are demonstrating Accountability,” said Zoe Teed McKay, Provincial Executive Director of Mental Health and Addictions for the SHA.
“Our Mental Health and Addictions Services teams understand we have a responsibility to be informed and knowledgeable about the legislation that guides our actions and decision-making to prevent harm and promote healing for our clients and families.”
The goal is to help SHA staff understand the MHSA as well and how it applies to real-life situations.
After finishing the module, staff will:
- know the purpose of the Act,
- understand their roles and responsibilities under the Act,
- know the legal rights of patients defined in the Act,
- understand assessment, admission, treatment and discharge as defined in the Act, and
- explain and use relevant forms within the Act.
SHA physicians, psychiatrists, MHAS inpatient and outpatient staff and emergency department (ED) staff can find the module by following these instructions and searching “Mental Health Services Act Education Module”. In the future, the module will be shared with other external agencies and organizations delivering mental health and addiction services, including Ministry of Health staff.
