Total of 109 acute care beds being added to Saskatoon City Hospital
Yesterday, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Ministry of Health announced a $15 million investment, with additional funding in the upcoming budget to expand acute care capacity at Saskatoon City Hospital (SCH).
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is excited and grateful to our government partners for this investment, which builds on the governments’ previous $30 million commitment in the 2024–2025 budget. This funding supports the SHA’s ongoing efforts through the Provincial Capacity Pressure Action Plans to address hospital capacity challenges in Saskatoon, a tertiary centre that serves the entire province.
Over the next 12 to 16 months, the SHA will implement a phased plan to increase acute care capacity at SCH by adding 109 acute care beds. This includes adding 22 Acute Rehabilitation beds, 12 Acquired Brain Injury beds, 60 inpatient general medicine beds and 15 High Acuity beds. To facilitate this expansion, the SHA will be hiring more than 500 additional staff and physicians, renovating areas of the hospital, and transitioning some outpatient and continuing care services currently in SCH into existing SHA capacity or commercial space in the community.
The expansion will create new job opportunities for health-care professionals while providing existing staff with more resources and enhanced support to manage increased patient volumes.
This initiative is one component of the broader strategy to optimize hospital space, improve patient flow, and enhance access to critical services to meet the needs of Saskatchewan patients today and into the future.
