Overview
Description
- Draw specimen just prior to a scheduled meal or feeding (approximately 3-4 hour fast, not a strict fast)

Specimen types accepted
- Plasma or serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Dark Green (Lithium Heparin) 4 mL
- Alternative collection containers:
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4 mL whole blood
- Minimum/pediatric volume: 0.5 mL whole blood
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Stable at room temperature for 8 days; refrigerated for 2 months; frozen for 3 months
- Store plasma/serum frozen
- Ship plasma/serum frozen to referral laboratory
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria

- Must include diagnosis and/or patient symptoms, and diet information on the requisition

- A recent medication list relevant for clinical interpretation of results
