Engaging in Patient Research
Saskatchewan Centre for Patient Oriented Research (SCPOR)
The Saskatchewan Centre for Patient-Oriented Research (SCPOR) was formed as part of Canada’s Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) implemented by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). SCPOR is one of 11 SUPPORT units dedicated to building capacity for patient-oriented research.
SCPOR is a partnership of organizations that play a key role in supporting patient-oriented research (POR) across Saskatchewan. The partner organizations (including the SHA) provide financial and in-kind support, with representatives from each partner organization participating on the Oversight Committee (OC) and in a variety of other programs. Together with SCPOR, we work to provide the services and supports needed to further patient-oriented research in Saskatchewan.
The SCPOR Patient Engagement Team resides in the SHA Patient & Client Experience Program Support & Development portfolio and consists of 3 members.
What does SCPOR Do?
Our Vision: Working together for a healthier Saskatchewan through patient-oriented research.
Our Mission: Build capacity and collaborations to conduct responsive, equitable, innovative, patient-oriented research that continuously improves the care and health of Saskatchewan people.
SCPOR Patient Partner Advisory Committee
The Patient Partner Advisory Committee (PPAC) is comprised of Patient Partners interested in furthering Patient-Oriented Research in Saskatchewan. They help guide SCPOR’s priorities. Click here to learn about the members of SCPOR’s Patient Partner Advisory Committee.
Mandate:
Patient, family, community and public engagement is central to improving the quality of health research, quality of health care and the health of Saskatchewan people. The Saskatchewan Centre for Patient Oriented Research (SCPOR) Patient Partner Advisory Council (PPAC) will work together with the SCPOR Oversight Committee (OC), the Indigenous Health Advisory Council (IHAC), and the SCPOR Patient Engagement team to support patient-oriented research in Saskatchewan. Patient Partners will be engaged as co-leaders and co-designers in SCPOR strategies with the aim of supporting timely, meaningful and collaborative engagement of patients, families, communities and the public in health research and health system transformation.
Purpose of PPAC
- Promote patient engagement across all SCPOR component areas.
- Promote the awareness of patient-oriented research in Saskatchewan communities including co-developing communication strategies and co-presenting at education and awareness events.
- Collaborate with SCPOR to: recruit, orientate and mentor Patient Partners and interested community representatives.
- Collaborate and co-create processes and tools for engaging patients and communities in patient-oriented research projects and in SCPOR working groups and activities.
- Co-design processes and procedures in partnership with SCPOR’s Oversight Committee that enable patients and communities to be full partners in establishing patient-oriented research priorities.
- Co-design and support a Saskatchewan Patient Partner Community of Practice that brings together individuals interested in sharing learnings and building capacity in the area of patient-oriented research and patient engagement.
- Co-develop tools that evaluate the Patient Partner experience and the effectiveness of patient engagement in all SCPOR’s projects and initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s Patient & Family Leadership Council (PFLC) to share learnings and develop relationships that work towards the sustainability of patient-oriented research in Saskatchewan and promote elements of active and meaningful patient engagement within the health care system.
Guiding Principles
- Discussions take place in the spirit of co-operation and in recognition of the shared goal of advancing patient-oriented research.
- All members are encouraged to fully voice their views and share their knowledge on the issues discussed, are supportive of SCPOR’s vision, mission and values and are committed to enhancing patient-oriented research and meaningful patient engagement.
- PPAC works toward achieving consensus whenever possible.
- All members are respectful of diversity and differing opinions and are honest with one another.
- All members respect and understand the differences between an advisory role that supports a focus on patient-oriented research activities and that of a patient/community advocate that represents a specific idea or opinion seeking a solution. While an advocacy role is both valid and valuable to the healthcare system, PPAC members bring a broad perspective to council meetings that embraces collaborative partnerships and open discussions.
